Many children in Melela have to cross one of the country's main highways to reach school. Most families opt not to send their children to preschool or kindergarten because of the risks. As a result, when students finally enter the education system in the first grade, they do so with a disadvantage. They are already behind their peers, lacking the foundational skills that early childhood education could have provided.

Many classrooms are overcrowded, frequently having over 50 students. Teachers, overwhelmed by the sheer number of children, are unable to provide the support and guidance that each child requires to catch up and thrive. The cycle of disadvantage thus perpetuates itself.
